Fetal Position: The Instant Relaxation Sleep Position
While sleeping, most of us keep our body in a position which is most comfortable and relaxing. Today, I am going to talk about a sleep position which can give you instant relaxation- the fetal position. In this position, a person's body imitates that of a baby in the mother's womb; that is, a person lies on their side and brings their knees up towards their chest.
For a normally healthy person, this position is known to provide instant relaxation and it also allows your spine to rest in a natural alignment. Sleeping on your side is most comfortable during pregnancy, in case of those who suffer from heartburn, acid reflux, obstructive sleep apnea, and snoring. Older people also prefer side sleeping.
When sleeping in the fetal position, make sure that you use a firm mattress and align your spine in such a way that there is no added pressure on your neck. One may choose from these two variations to feel more relaxed:
- First variation: Slip up a pillow between your knees or thighs to provide proper alignment to your spine.
- Second variation: Keep a pillow under your head and another one under your armpits that is resting on the mattress. This will give better support to your upper back and the neck muscles.
If these variations of the fetal position are used, it's easier to keep your spine supported and balanced which releases pressure on your spinal tissues and enables your muscles to relax and recover. You must realize that everybody's needs are different and body position during sleep should be chosen based on what makes you feel comfortable. Sleeping position is determined by the overall shape of your body and the main body surface coming most in contact with your mattress.
